Shompen is a restaurant with a unique cuisine influenced by the Indian continent.

The cuisine is modern, artistic and progressive. The spices and herbs used in the menu are mainly used in different parts of India, Europe and Asia. Shompen is not a normal Indian restaurant of curries and tandoori delights: it’s full of artistically-made fusion food which can be appreciated only by the adventurous food-lovers.

The name ‘Shompen’ has come from an indigenous tribe on Great Nicobar Island in the Indian ocean. Shompen are a hunter-gatherer subsistence people, hunting wild game such as pigs, birds and small animals while foraging for fruits and forest foods. They also keep pigs and farm yams, roots, vegetables, and tobacco.

Chef Vikram

Born in Delhi.Young Vikram started his career as an apprentice waiter at Taj Group of 5-stars Hotels in Delhi. It didn’t take too much time to realised that he was more interested in watching the Chefs cooking and plating than Front of House. He fell in love with the white jackets and long hats. The other part he loved about the kitchen is the food plating, the presentation and dedication that every dish has.

He enrolled into one of the reputable institutes named the Institute of Hotel Management, catering and Nutrition, Pusa, New Delhi. After graduating, he started working with Kempinski Hotel in Mumbai as Chef Management Trainee for nearly 3 years.

At the time his family was living in Australia, so he came in a tourist visa to visit his family. He loved the country and became his new home. During those years, he traveled to America and worked with reputable restaurant under highly regarded chefs. As he came back to Australia, he joined at Sheraton Hotel Melbourne, worked along side chef Nicholas Polart. After his term in Sheraton, he was offered a position in Circa Restaurant, at Prince of Wales hotel in Saint Kilda, under chef Mathew Wilkinson.

All these years working in various 5 star hotels and restaurant, Vikram sharpened his skills in multi- cuisine. All the knowledge he gathered, he decides to use it with his native cuisine. Recently, he found an opportunity to open his own restaurant in Carlton called Shompen Dining Room.
